We’re doing a lot of new things these days; here’s another first for us - a coffee from China! I feel like loads of the Chinese coffee I see in speciality places is heavily processed - lots of naturals, anaerobics, yeast fermentations, etc. While they’re often delicious, I do find that they tend to mask the inherent characteristics of coffees a lot of the time. That’s why we went looking for a washed process coffee from China, to get more of an insight into what Chinese coffees really taste like underneath.

This one is really buttery (I wrote oily on my cupping sheet twice!), with lovely orange acidity and loads of creamy, nutty and sugary characteristics.

To go with it we have an amazing coffee from the Oaxaca region of Mexico. It’s from a relatively new importer called Ensambles, who really blew us away with the samples they brought for us to try at the roastery. This one is really complex; tropical fruits, florals, bright, a perfect bunch of high notes to balance the creaminess of the China.

Overall we get the Mexican coming through first - mango, pineapple and guava give way to the orange, white sugar and nut flavours of the China, with that butteriness lasting long into the finish.

Enjoy!
